The Ayalon Highways Public Transportation Department was established in 1999 to help the Ministry of Transportation manage and plan improvements in the public transportation system in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. The Public Transportation Restructuring Project for the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area is the Departments' top priority. The project is designed to bring about a comprehensive improvement in the public transportation system in the entire metropolitan area, which includes the Gush Dan region, most of the towns in the Sharon region, as well as the towns of Modi’in and Ashdod. The project is being implemented in conjunction with the local authorities, the bus operators, Israel Railways, NTA (Israel Light Rail) and others. The project's current focus is on planning improvements to the extensive bus network in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.
